13 Ways to Cool Off at Home This Summer

July 8, 2016

Jumping in Lake   And we thought it was hot last month! The pools are packed and so is the lake. Unfortunately, you can’t always make it to the pool or lake, and sometimes, you just want to be within arms reach of the air conditioning. If you’re looking for some ideas to stay cool with loved ones at home this summer (be that kids, a spouse, or your fur babies), here are some ideas we found on the web. If you have any other ideas, we’d love to hear them!   Play a Game of Spray Bottle Freeze Tag spray-bottle-freeze-tag-cover1 Amy at teachmama.com shared this game on the Melissa and Doug blog. It’s just like regular freeze tag, but you spray an opponent with water to “freeze” them, and they stay frozen until someone from their team crawls under their legs. Sponge Toss sponge-toss-activity_theresourcefulmama Fill your 5-gallon buckets and bust out the car washing sponges (but not dad’s favorite ones). Dip the sponges in the bucket and toss to the other person with a bucket. The Resourceful Mama says that this is a good game for both children and whole families. Water Balloon Pinata water balloon pinata_fireflies and mudpies Have a plastic bat, a bandana, some water balloons and string? When it’s hot outside, you’d much rather be splashed with water than eating candy anyway! See more at Fireflies + Mud Pies Duck Duck Splash! Duck Duck Splash_733blog.com Do you see the pattern here? Almost every child’s game can be changed to incorporate water in the summer. Kim at 733blog.com explains how Duck Duck Goose can be changed to keep the kids laughing and cool this summer. Frozen T-Shirt Race Frozen-t-shirt-race_agirlandagluegun.com We’ve seen this one played at the local Augusta Green Jackets baseball game before and can’t wait to try it. Kimbo with A Girl and a Glue Gun shows you how to set it up. Water Balloon Toss water-balloon-toss-out-of-milk-jugs-768x1525_agirlandagluegun A Girl and a Glue Gun also had this brilliant idea – water balloon toss with recycled milk jugs! Genius. Water Balloon Volleyball Water Balloon Volleyball_urbanfunnyfarmblogspot Urban Goes Country shows how using beach towels and a little teamwork, you can have a fun water play activity for a group of any age! Make Mini Water Blobs Mini Water Blobs_Hello Wonderful This is the “coolest” idea, though it does look like it requires a bit of effort. Rather than one large water blob, make small individual blobs for each child. They’ve even got little floating fish inside! Kudos to hello, Wonderful. Water Dumping Race waterraces-610x1024_royalbaloo.com This is a quick and easy water activity for the kids to play in the back yard. Using buckets and Tupperware that you already have at your house, the kids can race to scoop water from one bucket until they’ve filled all of the other buckets. Royalbaloo.com Keep your spray bottles in the refrigerator Spray bottle_amazon Photo: Amazon.com When the temperatures are in the upper 90s and above, spraying yourself off with a spray bottle is a great way to lower your body temperature. To get even colder, store your spray bottles in the refrigerator, or add ice cubes to them! Make a Redneck Air Conditioner momwithaprep-redneck-ac-socila When all you want to do is sit, Mom with a Prep explains how to make a “redneck airconditioner”, an old stay-cool standby that’s been around for decades. Freeze Your Fruit Frozen-Grapes_onegoodthing One Good Thing by Jillee describes the refreshing taste of eating frozen fruit on a hot summer day, along with some other ways to stay cool when it’s hot outside. Don’t Forget Your Furry Friend Frozen dog treats_home is where the boat is blog Puppies need to stay cool in the summer heat too, so don’t forget to provide them shade and plenty of water.
