Whether you’re the neighborhood’s greatest Saturday night hostess, or you just like to spend a lot of time with the family, it’s undeniable that Open Floor Plans are the trend for entertaining in both new home construction and remodeling. The most common type of open floor plan is that with a “great room”, which combines the kitchen, dining room, and living room in one shared space.
An open-plan space has no or few dividing walls between areas. This creates an open, flowing layout with fewer traditional individual rooms in favor of a communal living space.
Have you ever noticed that family and friends tend to gravitate to the kitchen? That’s because the kitchen is usually where the action’s at! It’s the backdrop for meals, snacks, homework, and casual chats with friends. That’s why we’re seeing the trend for rooms that flow, with wide doorways (or no doors), and large spacious kitchens. Large kitchen islands with one side for barstools provide a comfortable place for guests to sit while you’re cooking in the kitchen. They also provide ample storage for all those once-in-a-while kitchen appliances and serving trays that you don’t use on a daily basis. (That’s right, no more cake stands in the linen closet).
We’re also seeing a pattern in the request for a separate formal dining room with an open Breakfast Nook in the kitchen.

The Ross Plan is one of the best home plans we offer for entertaining. It’s named for one of our most social employees, who designed the layout himself to be perfect for entertaining friends. As you walk into the wide foyer, you pass the open dining room on your left.
When you round the corner, you find yourself in the spacious kitchen, open to both the Great Room with a fireplace and the Breakfast Nook.
The 12-foot granite-top kitchen island has an overhang on one side for barstools.
From the Great Room area, both patio doors open up to a spacious back porch with an optional outdoor fireplace.
